Next-level G Master performance: even sharper with gorgeous bokeh
2 XA (extreme aspherical) elements achieve eye-opening resolution right out to the image edges. Eyes and expressions can be captured with stunning clarity regardless of framing. Sony's Nano AR Coating II suppresses flare and ghosting in just about any lighting. Minimum focus distance is 2.79ft (0.85m) (AF) / 2.63ft (0.8 m) (MF).
Stunning G Master bokeh with smoother transitions
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II carries on the acclaimed performance of the FE 85mm F1 .4 GM with a new optical design that controls chromatic aberration for more natural bokeh. An 11-blade circular aperture provides further enhancement, while precisely controlled spherical aberration works with XA (extreme aspherical) elements to minimize onion-ring bokeh. All of this means smooth transitions from sharp focus to deep bokeh at F1 .4.
The full AF speed and precision of advanced Alpha-series bodies can be realized
Two XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and high-speed control give the FE 85mm F1.4 GM II AF speed that is up to 3x faster3 than previous model4 . Moving subject tracking is improved by as much as 7x5, allowing reliable capture even when using extremely narrow depth of field at F1 .4. The 120 fps6 capability of the Alpha 9 Ill with its global shutter is fully supported. The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II offers extraordinary creative control for serious portraiture.
Smaller and lighter1 with no image quality compromise
XA (extreme aspherical) elements, refined optics, XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, and a compact circular aperture unit pack superb large aperture performance into a barrel that measures just 3-3/8” (84.7mm) x 4-1/4” (107.3 mm) and weighs only 22.7 oz. (642 g). That's about 13%6 less volume and 20%6 less mass for outstanding agility and ergonomics.
ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration for precisely rendered edge detail
Two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements significantly reduce flare and ghosting by taking axial chromatic aberration and chromatic aberration (due to differences in magnification) out of the picture. Resolution and bokeh is maximized while leaving precisely rendered edges without fringing or unnatural coloration right out to the image edges.
An ideal 85mm F1.4 lens for filmmaking
The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II is an ideal choice for filmmaking. It works perfectly with Real-time Recognition AF in a-series bodies, for fast, precise, quiet subject tracking that maintains sharp focus on moving subjects even at F1.4. Focus breathing has been minimized, and in-body breathing compensation is supported7. The aperture ring can be switched to click-less operation, and Linear Response MF allows smooth and intuitive manual focus control.
Professional control
Two customizable focus hold buttons and an AF/MF switch offer flexible operability, while an independent aperture ring and Linear Response MF focus control provide intuitive control for creative shooting. The FE 85mm F1.4 GM II accepts 77mm threaded filters.
Rugged reliability
A dust and moisture resistant design8 ensure reliability in challenging outdoor conditions. The front lens element features a fluorine coating that repels fingerprints, dust, water, oil, and other contaminants.
Round-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood
A round-shaped, bayonet mount lens hood ALC-SH180 provides a rubber outer ring, and a button press lock/unlock is supplied, and available separately as an optional accessory.
